While the high waters along the rivers Elbe and Saale are making their way north, the flooded eastern German city of Halle on the Saale appeared to have passed the worst on Thursday (June 06).

Local authorities said they would maintain the state of emergency declared a few days ago but that the water was slowly receding.

A dam set up to protect the Neustadt district broke a day earlier, flooding several streets.
Residents in the area were asked to leave their homes and according to witnesses, people living higher up in the East German-made buildings of precast concrete slabs refused to evacuate.
