Clashes erupt at the border between Kosovo and Serbia.

Police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse hundreds of demonstrators trying to block traffic from Serbia.

The ethnic Albanian protesters were decrying what they said was Serbia's obstruction of Kosovo's independence.

They ignored calls to disperse, and were throwing rocks at police.

Dozens were detained, and some protesters and police were injured.

Albin Kurti, The head of the party Self-Determination, said Serbia's behaviour should be questioned.

[Albin Kurti, Head of “Self-Determination” Party]:
"People of Kosovo want reciprocity, parliament of Kosovo decided for full reciprocity, political, economical and trade reciprocity with Serbia. And by behaving good with Serbia, Serbia is getting worse."

Ethnic Albanians make up 90 percent of Kosovo's population.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, and has been recognized by more than 80 countries.

But Serbia's opposition to its existence has slowed Kosovo's development, obstructing its foreign policy and hampering trade with other countries.

Tensions have been simmering since last year over the status of a small slice of land in northern Kosovo, adjacent to Serbia and populated by Serbs who reject secession.
