A flash flood in central India swept away five women who were washing clothes on the riverbanks on Sunday (June 9), an eyewitness said.

The incident took place along the River Narmada in the state of Madhya Pradesh, where around 200 local women were washing clothes.

Rescue divers managed to save four of the five victims but one woman was still missing.

The flash flood caught many by surprise as the level of the River Narmada rose suddenly, trapping some women and children on a small rock in the middle of the swollen river.

The cause of the flash floods is yet to be determined, but authorities are investigating whether water was released from a nearby dam.
