Sandstorm Damages Houses and Crops in Xinjiang, N.W. China
An unusually strong sandstorm swept the Tekes County of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Tuesday, damaging houses and crops. No casualties were reported.
The sandstorm lasted more than three hours. Trees were uprooted by gales and fell on residences. Roofs of a few residences were blown off.
[Yang Guoying, Resident]:
"Strong wind yesterday blew off the roof and then carried it dozens of meters away from my house. It will cost me 15,000 yuan to repair it."
Wind coupled with sand also destroyed crops.
The sandstorm also knocked out power supply in the whole Kalatuohai Township. The power department was conducting repairs around the clock.
Departments of civil affairs and transport also took part in the disaster relief operations.
