Laptop buyers beware—one of the latest malicious software to be discovered may already be installed on your new computer. Microsoft researchers in China discovered malware on the hard drives of 20% the new laptop computers they had bought for testing.

On the latest posting on Microsoft’s blog, Assistant General Counsel Richard Boscovich, from the Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit says, “We found malware capable of remotely turning on an infected computer’s microphone and video camera, potentially giving a cybercriminal eyes and ears into a victim’s home or business.”

Most of the computers were infected with the malicious software program called Nitol. Boscovich says Microsoft will, “continue to work to protect people that use our products and services from these threats and the cybercriminals behind them.”
