What Do Chinese Think of Democracy?
What does democracy mean to Chinese people? What do they think of when they think of democracy? A recent book by Zhang Mingshu from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences goes into that topic. It’s called “What kind of democracy do Chinese people want?” It details a survey he conducted in four major Chinese cities. The survey is similar to one he conducted in 1988, before the 1989 student pro-democracy protests in Tiananmen Square. The conclusions he comes to, and the changes in how Chinese people view democracy, are quite interesting.
