Like his predecessors, China's leader Xi Jinping chose Russia as his first foreign tour stop. During his visit, Xi praised Russia and China’s relationship as the “best bilateral ties between major nations.”

But despite signing a slew of deals for Russia to provide resources to China, and even reports of new weapons sales from Russia, the nature of the China-Russia relationship isn’t as strong as Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin have made it out to be.
